Since I started in January I have been focusing on EXITO’s engagement in the TEC Embedded Literacy Project. This has involved a lot of internal capability building, with presentations to staff and EXITO stakeholders on the importance of workplace literacy, the development of a Literacy Strategy and the implementation of pilot programmes in both the Protective Coatings and Extractives sectors.
A small trial in the Hot Dip Galvanizing industry saw the development of a new embedded literacy resource for Unit Standard 2396; Select, use and maintain portable handheld engineering power tools, which has been trialed in several workplaces and is currently being fine tuned through industry feedback. To take a look at the resource for Unit Standard 2396 click here. NOTE *The resource is still in a draft stage with changes pending*
A larger trial in the Extractives sector is now underway, with several more unit standard workbooks under development as well as an industry specific diagnostic assessment tool to assess the literacy levels of trainees prior to them embarking on training, to pick up and cater for any needs they may have. This trial will begin with the assessment of trainees in June and the rolling out of the new training material over the following six months, then the re-assessment of trainees at the end of the trial period.
The trials will benefit both employers and trainees, and EXITO industries as a whole. With the feedback given from participants in the trials we aim to continue to develop user friendly, fit for purpose resources with embedded literacy that will allow for easier completion of qualifications, as well as developing a sustainable model of support in literacy and numeracy for our industries.
